Em um importante achado arqueológico, um mergulhador amador descobriu um rico depósito de moedas do Império Romano no mar da costa nordeste da Sardenha, na Itália, a descoberta, datada da primeira metade do século 4 d.C., é considerada uma das mais importantes dos últimos anos.
As moedas, que estão em um estado de conservação excepcional, foram encontradas a uma profundidade de cerca de 4 metros, elas são do tipo fólis, que eram moedas de bronze de pequeno tamanho e baixo valor. No entanto, o grande número de moedas encontradas, estimado em cerca de 30 a 50 mil exemplares, torna esta descoberta particularmente significativa.
As moedas foram cunhadas durante o reinado de vários imperadores romanos, incluindo Constantino, Constâncio II e Magnêncio, elas apresentam imagens de divindades romanas, como Júpiter, Minerva e Marte, bem como retratos dos imperadores.
Além das moedas, as escavações também revelaram fragmentos de ânforas, que eram usadas para transportar mercadorias, as ânforas são de origem africana e oriental, o que sugere que a Sardenha era um importante centro comercial durante o período romano.
A descoberta está sendo investigada pela Superintendência de Arqueologia, Belas Artes e Paisagem de Sassari e Nuoro, na Sardenha, os arqueólogos acreditam que as moedas e as ânforas podem fornecer novas informações sobre a história e a economia da ilha durante o Império Romano.
A descoberta é mais uma evidência da importância da Sardenha como um importante centro comercial e cultural durante a antiguidade, a ilha foi ocupada pelos romanos por mais de 700 anos, e durante esse período foi um importante ponto de ligação entre o Mediterrâneo Ocidental e Oriental.
